Insects contain proteins, fat and chitine which are valuable resources for applications in food, feed and as biobased chemicals.
RADIUS investigates the potential of insects as alternative sustainable sources of biomass. We currently have a continuous colony of four insect species i.e. black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens), yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), house crickets (Acheta domesticus) and migratory locusts (Locusta migratoria). The insect breeding research focuses on: · Optimisation of breeding protocols for different insect species · Valorisation of organic side streams from industry and agriculture · Development of pilot scale production systems · Quality and safety during breeding |
